This module will introduce you to the essential knowledge and skills in Accounting and Finance that you will need as a practicing manager. We assume that you are new to the subject and that you are a general business learner - not an accounting specialist. The module will develop your learning in stages. We'll start from familiar ideas about money and business, move through internal Accounting issues like budgets then show you the key ideas in financial statements. Finally we will give you an overview of the sources and uses of Finance required for a sustainable organisation. These will cover for-profit and not-for-profit as well as public service contexts. Along the way, you will meet important ideas around information systems for planning, controlling and making financial decisions as well as understanding the basics of risk. A grasp of these financial matters is essential in excelling in the modern business world either as a professional manager in an established company or a serial entrepreneur in a new start-up firm. This module will demystify Accounting and Finance in a way that builds confidence, promotes self-awareness, increases curiosity, develops critical thinking, appreciates independent analysis, and facilitates result orientation.

What is a business organisation and what external factors affect its objectives and how well it performs? These are the sort of questions that are examined in this module, which provides an introduction to different types of business organisations and how they interact with the different environments that they operate within.

The module particularly focuses on the factors affecting businesses that are located in advanced economies, as well as in developing countries/emerging economies (to a lesser extent). As a result, there will be a focus on issues relating to market and industrial structure, international trade and technological change. However, in addition to emphasizing the economic, financial and technological factors that can impact on business organisations, political, social, cultural, legal and environmental influences will also be considered.

This module employs a problem-based learning approach in which learning prepares you to develop intellectual and personal skills in analysing and problem-solving business and management challenges. This module is intended to develop your ability to understand the main features of managing an organisation, considering various aspects of management and leadership whilst applying commercial acumen. Through the DISCOVER lectures, SHARE & APPLY seminars and workshops, in addition to the supported learning materials and wider reading for EXPLORE, you will be introduced to academic concepts enabling them to apply management theory to organisational practice. EXPLORE MORE is an additional resource to be completed towards the end of each week to supplement your learning. Through the learning and assessment strategy, you will be encouraged to develop your knowledge and skills in problem-solving and apply this to your role as an aspiring manager.

You interact with an organisation from the time you first join a school to, long after you retire. Therefore, it is important to develop a good understanding of how to behave towards as well as within an organisation. Organisations are evolving living organisms – where people, productions and processes are continuously interacting with, and responding to the internal and external environments. As such, Organisational Behaviour covers the relationships between individuals, between groups within an organisation and between an organisation and the external environment. Through various types of organisational interactions (student, employee, consumer, patient), you will learn the behaviours that are appropriate, as each organisation is a unique entity. You will also understand the impact of events in the 2020s, such as Covid 19, Black Lives Matter protests and global warming on how the world has changed the way it works. Covid 19 forced organisations and individuals to change behaviours by adopting remote working, online shopping, gig economy and extensive use of technology such as virtual meetings, online teaching, online consultations with doctors etc. The Black Lives protests have highlighted the social inequalities and racial disparities in societies and workplaces, across continents. The dire future scenarios relating to the impact of climate change on the climate has forced organisations to change how they work, for example Zara now having to address its 'fast fashion' strategy of providing new clothing lines every 3 weeks. A study of organisational behaviour will enable you to understand your own behaviours, attitudes and performance, as well as those of the people with whom you will be working. You will learn how to use technology, remote working, diversity, equality and inclusion towards the creation and sustenance of strong organisational cultures and effective work teams in an environment that must be sustained for future generations.

It is aimed specifically at enhancing employment skills and competences and enabling graduates to succeed in the world of work. These have been developed in alignment the Chartered Management Institute employability framework and which are used to map onto the programme's modules.
The nature of organisations and thus the nature of the work that people do in organisations is continually evolving. The digital age – referred to as the 4th Industrial Revolution – is transforming organisations and the nature of work. Whether we agree with how digitisation is transforming organisational life, it is clear that these technological changes will continue to have significant effects on the world of work and thus the careers that individuals pursue. We are living in an era where jobs that existed at the beginning of this century are being replaced with new jobs, some of which we are not yet fully aware of. Against this broader context, this module will help you better understand the background to managing people as key resources in organisations and the approaches adopted to attract, select and retain the best people. By gaining knowledge of the processes organisations use to recruit the best 'skilled' people and retain them through the career structures and support mechanisms, you will be able to apply this to help you develop your own career management skills; particularly how to gain entry into a graduate level role within different types of organisations. Throughout the module we will guide you through recruitment and selection approaches adopted when recruiting into graduate level roles, drawing on a combination of theories and case examples. The seminars, while very practical in nature, are designed to encourage you to think and reflect on the career offerings provided by organisations, your own career aspirations and the actions you will ned to focus on to secure graduate level employment. As with all learning – the energy you choose to put into the different learning activities that we will engage you in – the more you are likely to benefit. In the short term, this means being better prepared for the module assessment. In the longer term, helping you develop the knowledge and skills to plan and manage your career. The aim on this module is to help you better understand the importance of managing people as key resources in organisations and the approaches adopted to attract, select and retain the best people. By gaining knowledge of the processes organisations use to recruit the best people and, just as importantly retain the best people through the career structures and support provided, you will be able to apply this knowledge to planning your own career development. Initially, we will be focusing on your first graduate level role, but it doesn't stop there.
This module aims to offer students a broad introduction to the principles and practices in operations, logistics and supply chain management. The module will include a critical exploration of contemporary issues in the mentioned areas including location and layout, process and capacity design, human resources and job design, the management of the supply chain, inventory, and quality in a range of different industrial and service sectors.
In today's environment, effective managerial decision-making requires timely and efficient use of scarce resources. The purpose of this module is to develop your ability to analyse the (economic) environments in which firms operate, and to understand how managerial decisions can vary under different constraints. The emphasis of the course is on economic intuition and its relevance to business problems. The module considers a variety of business issues from an economic perspective, providing a critical understanding of the firm as a complex organisation.

This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost your employability even further. If you choose this route, you will take the placement following year two of your course, and then return to complete your degree.

It is aimed specifically at enhancing employment skills and competences and enabling graduates to succeed in the world of work. These have been developed in alignment the Chartered Management Institute employability framework and which are used to map onto the programme's modules.
The idea that business should behave responsibly has perhaps never been more needed. Surely no business means to act irresponsibly, and yet almost every day you see examples in the media of businesses, and business people, that 'behave badly'. You will be familiar with the 'big' scandals- VW altering emissions data, Johnson and Johnson sued for not being entirely open on the addictiveness of opioid painkillers. On the module you will meet these, and more. We will ask what it is to behave badly – is it breaking the law? If so then that seems quite simple, the law breaker is in the 'wrong' (although, even then, that may be arguable). But we will look at more ideas too like is behaving unethically transgressing some 'rule' on what is acceptable behaviour? And if so, how do (indeed can) we agree what the 'rules' are and what 'good behaviour' is? We will be exploring this, and what it means to be a responsible manager, in this module. You will do this by critically exploring the moral and ethical challenges in managing organisations and you will examine how managers, who are both under pressure to act in a more socially responsible and sustainable manner, and to hit performance targets, can approach their work with the tools of ethical thinking. You will look at how changing social attitudes and values have made organisations question their obligations to their stakeholders, as well as to wider society. You will be introduced to some concepts that will challenge your thinking, such as what is a business for? Who is the business run on behalf of, and what responsibility do you as an individual have within the organisation to stay true to your values? Each week we will challenge you to define how you would act as an ethical leader. This module will contribute to your 'Business Readiness' through challenging you to debate what your values you – and how you put them into practice.
Labour Economics is concerned with many of the important decisions facing individuals at various different points in their lives, despite some of these decisions being made when the person is not actively involved in the labour market. For example, it has helped us to gain a far better understanding of the factors influencing how long to stay in full-time education and when is the best time to retire. In addition to issues related to labour supply, the demand side is integral to the functioning of labour markets. As such, firm behaviour will be examined in the context of the labour market, especially with regards to how workers and firms interact. This includes in their responses to actions of governments, particularly in connection to the labour market policies that can be introduced.
The Business and Management Dissertation module is an essential component in allowing the student to meet the goals that underpin the degree programme. It consists of an individual student led investigation into an applied business problem or issue selected by the student. The dissertation is an individual piece of work that presents a thorough and critical review of literature relevant to the research area under consideration. Dissertation is also a research project which tests the independent research skills and it employs gathering a first hand empirical data OR using secondary data – both options are feasible, both come with their own specific challenges. Finally, while dissertation is a piece of academic work that will draw on existing theory and practice, it should also make sense to a business practitioner. It will have academic references like a good essay or journal article and may make recommendations as to how to solve a business problem.
This module introduces students to the practice of consultancy. Many graduates carry out consultancy tasks within their place of work or whilst being employed as consultants. The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the key skills necessary to carry out the work of a consultant. The module introduces students to models of consultancy practice and key stages in the consultancy cycle. This is also underpinned by sessions on client engagement, communication and presentation skills; data gathering and analysis; project management and team management. The module is underpinned by key theoretical principles of: Action Learning, Group Dynamics, Authentic Human Consulting and Personal Reflection. This module provides students with the necessary skill-set for examining management consultancy both as a business function as well as a type of business. The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the role that consultancy plays within organisations, the key methodologies and the distinguishing characteristics of successful consultancy projects.
This module will introduce you to concepts, technologies/innovations and challenges associated with contemporary issues in business and management. The overarching aim of the module is to enable you to develop your own perspective and confidently participate in a professional discourse surrounding these issues - be it at a networking event, job interview or project planning discussion post-graduation. Future of consumption and society, future of enterprise and future of work are frequently discussed contemporary concepts in academic as well professional practitioner literature and media. Digital transformation and Industry 4.0, AI and cognitive technologies, blockchain and extended organisational eco-systems are innovations and management models that transgress the above mentioned 'Future of' concepts. The module unpacks these complex and interlinked aspects, investigates innovations and technologies, as well as broader social and geo-political trends which shape these concepts so you can then evaluate their impact on selected industries/sectors, management disciplines and your own career.

This course is offered as a degree with foundation year – a four-year programme which provides an additional foundation year at the beginning of the degree, that will give you academic and practical experience, as well as the skills you need to ensure you are equipped to successfully complete your chosen degree.

This module aims to equip students with: 1. A basic understanding of use of English for Academic Purposes (terminology, concepts, ideas, etc.) in order to engage successfully with the level 4 modules on a degree programme; 2. A thorough grounding in academic study skills (essay structure, referencing, journal and library research, etc.) to prepare them for further study in Higher Education; 3. Confidence in their own abilities to use Reading, Writing and Spoken English effectively for academic purposes and to carry out further study; 4. Transferable and lifelong learning skills, to support continuing professional development and educational achievement.
The proposed module aims to equip students with: an introductory understanding of Business terminology, concepts, ideas, etc., in order to engage successfully with the Advanced module in the second term prior to taking level 4 modules on a Business degree programme. Students will be taught a basic grounding in academic study skills (essay structure, exam technique, referencing, journal and library research, etc.) to prepare them for further study should they wish to continue; confidence in their own abilities so that they may be able to make a well-informed and realistic decision about their ability to carry out further study; transferable and lifelong learning skills, to support continuing professional development and educational achievement.
The purpose of this module is to shift the emphasis of learning onto the students and apply subject-specific knowledge to one of the following contemporary topics: in(equality) or a protected characteristic. Students will need to demonstrate the ability to utilise the academic and subject-specific toolkit acquired through previous modules to manage their own learning, and in partnership with your tutors, negotiate, plan and carry out an investigation into the chosen topic. The module requires students to evidence readiness for entry into Level 4 of the degree programme through the e-portfolio which will contain a log of seminar activities.
